As a nurse and health advocate, I am always looking for different ways to relax and detox. Cupping is something I have tried in the past year and find it to be a fast and effective way to relieve pain.
What is Cupping?
Cupping is an ancient Chinese practice originating thousands of years ago.You start by placing a plastic cup onto your skin, creating a vacuum in the cup which draws the skin and muscle up into the cup. Leaving it on for 3-5 minutes. This vacuum can be created with either a hand suction pump or if you find the old school version which is using a glass cup with a burning cotton wool. The older version is a little harder to control and the newer method is much simpler.
Benefits of Cupping
- Promotes relaxation and stress relief
- Reduces chronic back pain and headaches
- Provides a feeling of relief from physical and emotional tensions
- Promotes healing and regeneration process – the exchange of blood allows the removal of toxins and dead cells
- Enhances circulation
- Reduces inflammation
These may look like funny dots or bruises but the benefits of this traditional Chinese practice can be helpful in many aspects. Depending on the person, the bruises can last for several days or only one day. The amount of time the markings stay does not mean the session did not work. It doesn’t hurt as you would think especially if something leaves bruises for days to come, it is a sort of relief and release of the pain. Once the markings have fully cleared that is when you can have another cupping session. It is inexpensive and can replace the cost of a massage if that is not in your budget. Always let the therapist know of any health problems you may have or any medications you are currently taking as this may effect your results.
